Chemical Imbalances: Real or Imagined?

One of the first terms that parents and others hear when someone shows symptoms of having a mental disorder is “chemical imbalance.” It is the catch-all that often is used to explain why someone suddenly shows signs of major depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. I remember being shocked when I used this term in a news article and was later confronted by someone who proudly identified themselves as being “anti-psychiatry.” She told me that there is absolutely no evidence that mental illnesses are real and/or caused by biological problems inside the brain.

I soon learned that this is an ongoing argument, often a bitter one, waged between different factions in the mental health community.

So I was happy when I was sent an advance copy of the book: SHRINK RAP: Three Psychiatrist Explain Their Work   written by Dinah Miller, M.D. Annette Hanson, M.D. and Steven Roy Daviss, M.D.. Their book is being published by the Johns Hopkins University Press next month.

The doctors, who write a popular mental health blog offer their take on “chemical imbalances” and I found their comments helpful.

What I’d do differently!

Since the publication of my book, CRAZY: A Father’s Search Through America’s Mental Health Madness, I have been fortunate enough to speak in 45 states (Yes, I still am waiting for invitations from groups in Oklahoma, Nevada, Mississippi, Alaska and Hawaii, hint, hint) and I have toured dozens of successful treatment programs. Sometimes readers ask me what I would do differently if I were given a chance to rewrite my book. It is an interesting question because I have learned so much and met so many fascinating people during the past several years.

The first thing I would do is change the title.

Follow Pete Online and Website Changes

Thank you to all who responded to the blog post awhile back about improving the blog. We have implemented many new updates. For one, the site has been completely revamped so that now individual pages are linkable and more easily accessed. For instance, you can link directly to the Crazy book page.

Pete is also now on Twitter (@peteearley), he has a Facebook fan page and I set up a Feedburner RSS feed for some of you to more easily track the blog updates. Please invite your friends, organizations, companies, etc. and let them know!

Once again, Pete has been thrilled with the response from the blog, so thanks to you the readers!

Help Us Improve the Blog

My name is Evan and I’m Pete’s son and also one of the main curators of his website. Between my brother and I, we redesigned and have been moderating this new site, including the blog. My Dad and I have been overwhelmed by the immediate success of this blog and it’s all thanks to you – the reader. We have seen the website statistics jump and almost double since the launch of the new PeteEarley.com. A large part of this reason is the blog. And because we have gained so much from you all, we want to provide an opportunity to make it a better experience for you.

I have read a few comments asking or suggesting some certain things to be added to the blog, such as following widgets, etc. I wanted to open the discussion to all the readers of the site.

What do you want to see on this blog that would make the experience better? Don’t focus so much on content, as that is Pete’s decision, not mine, but stuff that would make this blog more accessible. Such as RSS feeds or Twitter linking, etc. What features do other blogs that you read have that we don’t and you want? Also, are there currently problems you have with the way the blog is now? We want to make improvements as suggested by those who are most intimately involved with the blog each day.

Please keep the comments civil and constructive. I will be monitoring them the next couple of days and will take all the suggestions seriously. Thank you for reading and for making this blog a success so far!

A New Website!

Welcome to my redesigned website and my very first blog entry!

This new design was completed by Tony and Evan, two of my five sons. My original site was created by Tony and a friend, Ryan, nearly a decade ago when they were both in high school. (Yep, they were teenagers when they created it!)  During the past several years, Tony has revised my site and added many new features. But this is the first complete overhaul.

I love it and hope you do too!

One of the improvements is the addition of this blog. Evan, who graduates this year from Virginia Tech, has warned me that blogs should not be diaries. Instead, they should be used to share useful information. I’ll be following Evan’s advice in the coming days by posting some personal items, but mostly writing about mental health, espionage, publishing, and the joy and frustration of being an author.

Although Evan and Tony, who now is a commercial real estate appraiser in Fairfax County, didn’t believe it was still necessary, I am keeping my original guestbook – which now can be found under the title: FEEDBACK . I want readers to be able to sign in and leave comments.

I’ll start posting blog entries on Monday, January 4th, and am planning on putting a new entry on the blog every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Thanks for visiting and for your support.

Now let’s get started.
